I like the "Maizy", I think that what it says on ball band. Why? Just because I like the colors, the look summery. However, I would like to feel the yarn.

I'm probably late in this, but I would choose either the Lorna Laces, STR or Fleece Artist. I've worked with the first two and they are absolutely wonderful and would make a great simple sock. I also think you would want to work with a softer/nicer yarn for your first pair because you'll fall in love with the yarn so much, you'll want to keep on knitting socks! Hooray for you!

Well, I love the stuff in the upper-most left corner. It's got enough variance in color to be visually interesting, yet not seizure inducing.

I have a few more "idiot-proof" sock tutorials that I found free on the internet, if you'd like to check any of them out. One is by Stephanie Pearl McPhee. She totally demystifies knitting socks, in her matter-of-fact way. Next pair of socks I knit, I will be using her method.

Hee hee - really, you shouldn't worry about having a lot of sock yarn... ;) If you want to knit plain socks, I'd say the Opal or the Trekking.

I know you are knitting something simple, but seriously, I'd go with the STR, the fleece artist, or the Lorna's (in order of color preference on my part) just because they are nice yarns and GREAT colors. Seriously. Jealous of your sock yarn stash, and I have about the same sock knitting record as you!

I agree on the Opal, if you are doing a really basic sock. That'll knit up nice & pretty. But, it DOES also depend on who the socks are for. Opal is definitely less comfy than some of the others you've got (STR, Lorna's, as Katie J noted). If you're making them for a sensitive-footed person, I say go with something a bit softer...like maybe the one to the left of the Opal? :)

I like the Trampoline or the Opal or the wound purple stuff in the corner, since you're using stockinette stitch. The Opal is patterned, I believe, which would be best displayed by a simple stockinette. I think that the bright varigations of the Trampoline would hide any stitch pattern, so they will be best used in a stockinette stitch sock, too. The same goes for the purple yarn.

Can't wait to see what you do!
