Oh my you just found pictures of my dream house. I always wanted to be a hobbit, just a tall one with not so big and hairy feet. Hold on at 5'2"ish if I round up I guess I'm close ;-) I'm pretty sure that with some possible mods that it can be done in the US as well as Canada. I believe that they are some similar around North America already.

It reminds me of Bag-End!

You could absolutely do this in rural Ozarks counties - anything goes. Just buy a lot of land, otherwise you might wake up one day with an adult bookstore on one side and kids' petting zoo on the other.

Some friends of ours have a house built into a hill, though it's not NEARLY as cool as the one in the link.

I think it can be done! There's a whole crazy bunch of "natural" houses outside of Taos, for example.

I agree with beth -- it can be done. There are rammed earth structures, etc. all over the place. And, as she says, there's the whole Earth Ships village out in AZ. None of them look this cool, though.

Thanks for sharing the link! I've been wanting a hobbit hole for years now -- in fact, I found a site where the person suggested using huge concrete pipes as the framework of the house. Now, I'm off to immerse myslef in your link!

Truly, I think it can be done. I've been in a berm home and a straw bale home in Arizona that remind me of this.
